Ultrafiltration promoted by dialysis is represented by a red triangle, and Σ fluid balance (cumulative result of intake and output) is represented by a blue triangle. Of note, patients with normal renal function (reference – upper panel) were capable to maintain fluid balance close to zero. Patients with stages 3–4 chronic kidney disease – middle panel) presented a slightly positive fluid balance and some of them needed dialysis due to acute renal failure. Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (bottom panel) exhibited a positive and cumulative fluid balance despite an ultrafiltration promoted by dialysis
