Schematic representation of the time-line interventions used during the protocol. At baseline, samples for cytokine and arterial blood gas measurements, as well as functional data, were acquired. After the first 24 h of mechanical ventilation according to the ARDSnetwork protocol, a new set of functional measurements was performed, including a whole-lung CT-scan exam. Patients were subsequently divided into two groups (ARDSnet-48 h or ARDSnet + OLC). At the end of the protocol (a total of 48 h of observation), measurements were repeated, and a new CT-scan was acquired
